Hey! Who are you, and what are you working on?
My name is Roxana Turnbo , born in Miami Beach, Florida in 1984 and now have lived in Wahiawa, Hawaii for almost five years. It’s here in Hawaii where I’ve given birth to the start of my dreams.
One of them being; I own Surfer Girl Hawaii a company that offers Handmade fashion designed by me, Waterproof Cosmetics, and organic skincare for surfers and women that lead an active lifestyle.
Inspired truly by my busy mom of 3, boss lady lifestyle! Now I’m working on my first collection to show in Kauai During Hawaii Fashion Week(fingers crossed it stays scheduled!)
How did you come up with the idea?
I answered the early call of becoming a maker to bridge the facemask shortage when Covid-19 first broke out in the United States of America, especially Hawaii. During mask sewing, I realized that women still needed hidden confidence meanwhile enduring the new face fashion; waterproof & smudge-proof lipstick!
So I stepped into action and converted 18 years of cosmetology experience into my complete niche line of waterproof vegan cosmetics; GRR GRRL CosMEtics.
I’ve recently rebranded the line to Surfer Girl Hawaii, because for legality reasons I couldn’t expand the line to fashion and more so after an Epiphany, it’s more self-explanatory given that it’s headquartered here in Hawaii, it’s waterproof and Surfer Girls are RARE & FEARLESS! Surfer Girl Hawaii, it is!
What are the main challenges in your business right now?
Someone wise once said: “Create a product that solves a problem, and you’ll always get paid”
In my own innovative perspective, I’ve created a solution to women’s insecurities of not being able to wear makeup yet again almost feeling naked while they swim during a beach, pool, or any kind of water activity.
I created a cosmetic that would add confidence to any woman struggling with their body image and yet they want to go work out but do they really want to do it with a naked face?
Well, they don’t have to anymore they can wear makeup while they work out and sweat without having to worry that her foundation is dripping off onto her workout outfit or onto her skin.
I created a cosmetic complete line to support women going to special occasions such as a wedding, a prom, sweet 16, a date, dancing, competitions, anything that requires an enhanced face of applied makeup that won’t run , smudge or melt off; that’s where my company comes in surfer girl Hawaii, has your face in mind!
We are a NEW company and unless a celebrity or an influencer, wears, recommends Surfer Girl Hawaii; it’s hard to make noise in a market that’s already noisy.
We need new customers to try our sweat-proof/waterproof formulas to spread the word about our vegan and committed cosmetics and to wear our in-house designed fashion! That’s really it: sales enables my dreams to expand into bigger problem-solving products!
What is your favorite surf spot and why?
The North Shore for the Professionals, Waikiki for the beginners! Lol. I don’t personally surf but I will make that dream come true by booking lessons soon! However, I love to bodyboard with my family of four at our favorite spot is Bellows Beach in Oahu Hawaii!
